Jessica earns GTQ175 (€18.50, US$23) for every 100 kg delivered. The women working in agriculture in Guatemala only earn 10 per cent, overall, of the income earned from work in the sector. This is compounded by the fact that women find it difficult to access the labour market and the benefits derived from policies designed to ensure stable and sustainable food security.
Only women who had a child under 2 years old participated in this questionnaire. A higher score indicates greater involvement in early infant stimulation activities. The 16 circle leaders were identified based on prior collaborations and expressed interest and invited to co-design and co-facilitate the intervention. The Cooperative’s total harvest was 774 metric tons of first quality coffee. The women in the Cooperative, who make up 26% of the total producers, produced 40% of the harvest. While these efforts clearly make an impact in the lives of the women in Friendship Bridge’s programs, the organization also strives to expand its offerings to address one of the broadest scale issues Guatemala faces — migration. The Washington Post reported on April 1, 2021, that U.S. immigration agents processed more unaccompanied minors from Guatemala since the beginning of 2021 than from any other nation in the world.
According to the Human Rights Ombudsman, Guatemala is the second most violent country in the world for women. In 2012, some 700 women were murdered, many of whom were also sexually assaulted, their bodies then mutilated and left in public view. Women are often targeted as a method of retaliation and intimidation between rival gangs and larger criminal organizations, but a vast majority are victims of domestic violence. Nearly half of Guatemala’s children under the age of five are chronically malnourished; one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world.
