Tokyo Olympic marathon moved over climate concerns

The International Olympic Committee has announced plans to move the Tokyo 2020 marathon and race walking events over 800 kilometres south of Japan’s capital.
Organisers seem eager to prevent a repeat of what happened at the recent World Athletics Championships in Doha, where half the area failed to complete the women’s marathon.
The sponsor of the 1972 Winter Olympics, sapporo, could be five to six degrees cooler on average throughout the Games period of mid-to-late July and early August than Tokyo.
IOC president Thomas Bach said:”Trainers’ wellbeing and well-being are constantly in the center of our concerns.
“The new far-reaching proposals to go through the marathon and race walking events reveal how seriously we take such concerns.
“The Olympic Games will be the platform where players can contribute’once-in-a-lifetime’ performances, and such steps ensure they possess the conditions to provide their best.”
