Manager Ryan Giggs criticised Wales’ performance because they overcome Azerbaijan, but was relieved to assert an”important” 2-1 win.
Gareth Bale header saved Wales from an embarrassing draw against opponents ranked 109th in the entire world.
That kept alive his hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020, at Cardiff City Stadium on Friday despite having a display.
“There are advantages, but also things I was disappointed with,” said Giggs.
“It was significant. We said before it turned out to be a must-win match and we won it.”
Wales took a direct when Pavlo Pashayev was struck by a Bale shooter and wrapped in for an own goal.
Mahir Emreli equalised at the 58th minute for Azerbaijan, until Wales captain Bale led in with just over five minutes to perform.
“I wasn’t satisfied with the first half,” Giggs said. “We didn’t play well, didn’t adhere to the game plan. Too many errors, too many gamers off kind.
“I was not happy at half-time because I understood 1-0 would not be good enough. We needed to evaluate that objective.
“I am delighted with the 3 points, thrilled with the personality we’ve shown because it’s hard in any respect. We always work hard.”
Back-to-back defeats in June against Croatia and Hungary – the first time Wales had lost consecutive qualifiers for decades – had left little room for error to Giggs’ side for the rest of this effort.
Friday’s victory lifted Wales around next in Group E – degree on six points with Slovakia. The beating of croatia win against Slovakia saw the World Cup finalists join leaders Hungary on nine things.
Their operation against Azerbaijan’s unimpressive character has been a reason for concern, although wales stay to qualify.
“First half I was not happy because I felt there were targets there if we stuck into the game plan, when we moved the ball immediately and were patient, forced Azerbaijan run. We did not,” Giggs added.
“We were too hasty to get to the target, in too much of a hurry to play those forward passes.
“Azerbaijan are good at what they do, and it’s the exact identical result they had in Croatia. They might have scored three or even two in Croatia playing with exactly the identical manner.
“It is not easy. I’ve been like this in games. Youto perform with that risk ball’re not certain whether to stick or twist or maybe not but you need to have that assurance. There weren’t enough players in good shape from the first halfof the
“Joe Rodon great for his first cap – wow, what a performance. Also Tom Lawrence worked hard and Jonny Williams if he arrived on made a difference.
“There were lots of positives but I ask of players is they play to their skill and there weren’t enough who did that tonight.”
