Padres vs. Phillies MLB Pick – August 16th

In what was the biggest win for the Philadelphia Phillies this season, Bryce Harper crushed a grand slam for a walk-off win from the Cubs on Thursday night. The bases were loaded with two outs and the stage has been set for Bryce to be the hero. It was no doubter when it left his bat and all the Cubs can do is observe still another winnable game late in innings enter the bathroom.
Pedro Strop was triggered by the IL to allow him break following a rough stretch. Last evening it had been the very same as previously for Strop. He allowed 2 earned runs without recording an out, and then left Derek Holland at a challenging circumstance. I really don’t understand how many more discounted games the Cubs could get away with and still go to the postseason.
With the win, the Phillies dealt the Cubs a sweep at that three-game series. That’s what the Phillies needed to generate some much needed momentum. Going into that show, the Phillies were 1-5 in their past six games. Butif they follow up the victory they had against the Cubs having a dud, then the frustration is going to start all over again to the Phillies. It’s been that kind of year on them, but the ideal sign for these is that Bryce Harper appears to be finding his stroke now. That is bad news for everyone else who is at the National League wildcard search.
The Phillies remain home over the weekend, because they advised the Padres into Citizens Bank Park to get a three-game series. Philadelphia will soon be on the road in Boston and Miami following this weekend. Vince Velasquez will find the starting call to the Phillies, while Chris Paddack is anticipated for your visiting Padres on Friday night. Head under for our free Padres vs. Phillies pick.

Chris Paddack was just what the Padres were searching for this particular season. Regrettably, it is not the only thing that the Padres had to get over the hump and become a postseason team. With little depth in their pitching staff along with a hot and cold offense, the Padres have not been in a position to sniff the very top of the NL West. Playing in the same division as the Dodgers has something to do with it, but does a record of 56-64. The wildcard was up for grabs along with the Padres faded off while some began to play better baseball.
Paddack enters Philadelphia having an ERA of 3.26 and 0.93 WHIP. That’s fantastic for any pitcher and also exceptional for a rookie. He has made just 20 begins in his major league career, but Paddack chose it up pretty quickly. With 9 runs allowed in his last 10 innings, I would say he has seen better days, however. Paddack goes to this one with a 5.87 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in his past three outings.
Also remember he hasn’t been great on the street. He owns a 3.95 ERA in 57 innings as a visitor. It’s easy to discern why this is happening for Paddack. Petco Park is among the most pitcher friendly parks in baseball. There he has allowed only 6 home runs. But on the road that amount doubles to 12 extended balls afforded. The Phillies are hitting on .308 from 26 at-bats from Paddack. Bryce Harper is hitting against on .667 into 1 game .
Unexpectedly, the Padres have recorded just two hits against Vince Velasquez. In 24 at-bats, the Padres are hitting on 0.83 without the runs scored on him. He was dominant in a 5-0 win over the Padres last year. Velasquez has been pitching well lately as well. In his past four outings, he has not allowed more than 4 runs and gave up over two runs only once. With momentum and an enthusiastic home crowd on both sides, expect the Phillies to notch a win in the series opener against the Padres.
