The Prescott contract talk has intensified since Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz — a fellow 2016 draftee — signed a four-year extension worth an average annual value of $32 million (contract values up to $144 million, $66 million ensured ). Now, Prescott and Rams quarterback Jared Goff, the No. 1 overall pick in 2016, are awaiting their own extensions.
Irvin believes more than Wentz will be commanded by Prescott — and the team is in trouble if the Cowboys don’t oblige.
“Dak’s agents are not gonna let you run in beneath Carson Wentz,” Irvin said. “If they do not cover Dak, we can all pack it up and move home. It’s finished. How are you going to get anything out of the men if they’re seeing that you are not currently taking care of the guy? Why should I give you? You got to be smart about this, and this really is really a no-brainer.”
Because he was a fourth-round pick prescott is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this year. Goff and Wentz — the top two overall picks in the 2016 draft have similar rookie bargains, but first-round picks have a fifth-year team option too. This makes the sense of urgency with Prescott greater.
Prescott has publicly stated his desire to work out a deal, but notes that he”can not really say” exactly how close an agreement is because his agent is managing negotiations.
“I need to be a Cowboy forever,” Prescott said in May, through DallasCowboys.com. “I think that the people that are doing the bargain feel the exact same way. It’s no rush. I know that it will get done”
In his first three seasons with Dallas, Prescott has started all 48 games (32-16 record), throwing 67 touchdowns into 25 interceptions and directing the Cowboys into the playoffs twice. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler.
