Kieran Trippier says he took a step up when he made Tottenham to register for Atletico Madrid this summer.
After joining them trippier signed a deal in July with Atletico.
The 28-year-old had disclosed”behind the scenes” issues caused him to depart Spurs, but he insists his first move to Spain is a sign of advancement in his career rather than down a step.
“I am working with one of the best coaches in the entire world,” he told AFP.
“Atletico is among the biggest teams in Europe. I’m not even taking down a step, I am taking up a step.”
There were hints which Trippier’s movement could damage his career after he had been dumped for the climax of England’s Nations League campaign in May.
However, the Burnley defender Was called up to Gareth Southgate’s squad to the European Qualifiers from Kosovo and Bulgaria following the England head coach flew outside to watch him play Leganes in La Liga.
“I texted him to say thank you for coming out to see me and to get the support,” said Trippier. “It meant a great deal to understand I am still in his thinking.”
