Thomas O’Connor fired an 83rd-minute equaliser to earn Gillingham a point.
The home side took a 38th-minute guide when striker Tyler Smith was permitted to run unchallenged to the Gills’ box and sidestepped Connor Ogilvie prior to devoting a drive.
However, Gillingham were rewarded for pressure when substitute Mark Marshall crossed deep from the right and, though Ogilvie’s volley was parried by Anssi Jaakola, O’Connor was on hand to net the rally from six yards.
A first half of few chances watched Jonson Clarke-Harris nod the ball Bonham after 32 minutes only for O’Connor to get clear and back.
Jaakkola did not have a save. But the people looked the more likely winners.
While Rovers missing skipper Ollie Clarke, who limped off after 54 gillingham had to substitute Barry Fuller after 13 minutes, also appropriate wing-back Josh Hare that was transported off with 73 gone.
