World number one Brooks Koepka has disregarded the idea he’s a huge competition with Rory McIlroy.
Koepka, whose closest challenger at the world rankings is McIlroy, pointed out that the Northern Irishman hasn’t won a major since the American joined the PGA Tour in 2015.
“I am not looking at anyone behind me. I’m number one in the entire world,” he said.
“I’ve got open road in front of me I’m not looking in the rearview mirror, so that I don’t see it like a rivalry.
“I’ve been out here for, what, five years. Rory has not won a major because I’ve been on the PGA Tour.”
Koepka, 29, was talking .
“You know whether the lovers do [call it a competition ], then that is on them and it could be entertaining,” added the world number one, who equalled McIlroy’s tally of four major wins by defending his US PGA Championship in May.
McIlroy’s last victory came at precisely the same place in 2014 but he did win the PGA Tour’s Fedex Cup title this year and was also named player of the year by his fellow PGA Tour professionals.
“Look I love Rory he’s a fantastic player and he’s fun to observe, but it’s just difficult to think there is a rivalry in golf. I simply don’t notice it,” continued Koepka.
30, mcIlroy, asserted that he used a competition mentality to see the American in the season-ending Tour Championship off in August.
Koepka had outplayed McIlroy to win at the World Golf Championship event in Memphis and the Northern Irishman said that he was determined to avenge that defeat in the PGA Tour finale.
“He Koepka spoke about trying to be the dominant player in the game… and I thought:’He is going to need to go through me ‘,” said McIlroy following his East Lake victory.
“If that is both of our mentalities going forward, I believe that’s good for the game.”
Koepka was also runner-up in the Masters and US Open and shared fourth place at the Open Championship, together with McIlroy’s best major end in 2019 a eighth location.
